Ship Life

Before we docked in Uglich we had some shipboard lectures.  One on the Russian language (of course I can’t remember anything) we learned but the merchants we have met speak enough English to sell their item and negotiate a price that is lower if we start to walk away. There seems to be shopping on the way back to the ship at every one of the small villages we visit. Tourism supports the locals at least 5 months a year. Dan and his new favorite pastime of shopping at street merchants feels we need to support the local economy by purchasing “some treasure”, of course he doesn’t bargain because it makes “little difference and it is the merchants livelihood”.

We also have informational talks on Russian history and the time line from the beginning of the Tsars to present day. These talks take place over 4 days.   So not too much history at one time.  Again don’t ask me any questions and I am glad there is no quiz when we leave the ship.

I think one of the biggest surprises that Russia has provided is the landscape. The countryside that we have seen is covered in trees and forests. Lots of white birch trees with stark trunks, green firs and conifers that are vibrant green.   Even in Moscow several areas  were covered in trees.

On this river trip we have 3 “tour escorts”.  These are Russians who work and have lived here their entire lives. They are able to provide some of the background information about living and behaviors of the people.  Apparently it is common for Russians not to smile or make eye contact with you if you meet them on the street unless they know you. Russian children are taught to decline offerings even from friends and until they are asked 2 or 3 times.   The tour escorts use “guiding “ during the summer months in addition to teaching in the fall and winter. The guides are all knowledgeable and have very dry sense of humors which was also a surprise for us. Obviously a learned behavior when dealing with Americans.
